About 500 thousand journeys are made daily in the Metropolitano de Lisboa. Every day thousands of people cross their paths along the passageways, on the ticket halls, the station platforms, and on the trains.
|
In order that every thing runs smoothly we need your help, and so we ask you, when using the Metro, that you do so abiding by a set of rules, which if observed, we are sure will contribute to a better quality of the service we offer, with benefits to all.
|
Some of the rules given below are official, others are not, but they all aim to contribute to making all journeys using the Metro as smooth as possible from the moment that our customers enter the station.
|
- Always carry a valid ticket with you, when using the Metro.
- When on the escalators or travelators, stand on the right or walk on the left.
- Respect queues when you are waiting to buy your ticket, or waiting to pass through the access gates.
- Always remember to validate your ticket, at the station entrance, even if the access gates are open.
- When passing through an access gate, before validating your ticket, wait until the gate has closed after the customer in front of you has gone through.
- Do not go through the access gates together with another customer. This is considered to be an infringement of the law.
- For safety reasons, customers are not allowed to remain between the edge of the platform and the longitudinal yellow line marked on them.
- The wider access gates at the stations, called special gates, are to be used by customers with restricted mobility, especially those with wheelchairs, pushing prams, or carrying children or large objects. Do not use these gates if these conditions do not apply to you. These special gates are usually two-way gates. Pay attention to the signals. Only go through the gate when the green arrow is litten.

- Use the Help Points near to the access gates and at the automatic ticket selling machines whenever you need the help or support of a Lisbon Metro agent.
- When the train arrives in the station, do not remain in front of the carriage doors. Let the people get off the train first. Stand to one side, in order to allow the customers on the train to get off quickly.
- Do not get on or off the train after hearing the warning siren and seeing the door-closing lights on.
- There are special places in the carriages for the handicapped, pregnant women and people with babies. Give up your seat to someone who needs it more.
- Do not put your feet on the seats.
- Using the emergency buttons near to the access gates and the alarm signals in the trains is only allowed in an emergency. Their improper use is an infringement subject to penalties.
- Do not smoke on the Metro's premises, especially in the stations, accesses, establishments or facilities. Doing so is infringement that is punishable according to the law.
- Do not transport objects whose volume, shape, smell or content may affect the safety or comfort of other customers.
- Bicycles may be transported on the Metro, but only after 09:30pm on weekdays and on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays, with a maximum of two per carriage, as long as there are no large gatherings of passengers.
- Domestic pets may be transported on the Metro as long as they are suitably accommodated so as not to inconvenience, disturb or frighten other customers. Animals are considered suitably accommodated when enclosed in containers such as boxes, crates, cages or similar items, or wearing a functional muzzle, whilst, in this case, on a short leash (up to 1m long), which must be attached to a collar or harness, all made out of resistant material.
- Respect the stations and the trains, to make their use as pleasant as possible for everybody.
