Use of Metropolitano de Lisboa trains

A journey begins when you cross the station control line through the "entry" channels into the compulsory ticket area and continues until you leave the referred area crossing the station control line through the "exit" channels.
You must validate your ticket at the "entry" channels and keep it with you until you leave the compulsory ticket area at the "exit" channels. You must be prepared to show your ticket to our ticket inspectors when requested to do so.
Except in case of service disruption, and if you don’t leave the compulsory ticket area, the tickets validity ends after 3 hours from the time stamped in them by the validating equipment when entering the system through the "entry" channels at the station control line.

Offence
The payment of the transport price is a legal obligation. In order to travel on the Metropolitano de Lisboa trains (Lisbon Underground Railway) you must have a valid ticket or pass.
He who does not hold a valid ticket, will be breaking the law, namely for presenting a ticket or pass:
a) with price reduction, without having right to the reduction;
b) whose validity has expired;
c) not valid for the zone where the customer is traveling;
d) altered in its characteristics - tampered with;
e) on personalized card, or obliging the presentation of personalized document not belonging to the customer;
f) on personalized card, or obliging the presentation of personalized document without one of its constitutive elements;
g) on personalized card, whose constitutive elements do not present correspondence between themselves;
h) on personalized card, with electronic register tampered or damaged;
i) on personalized card, with transport stamp without the subscriber number inscription, or with the inscribed number not corresponding to the card number;
j) on personalized card, with a reproduction of the transport stamp;
l) whose condition makes it impossible to verify the identification or validity;
m) without validation, when the same is required.

Apprehension of transport fares
As stated on nº. 5 of article 7 of the upper mentioned Law, the ticket inspectors have the right to withdraw the tickets or cards falling under the conditions related on the entries, letters "e" to "m", above, as well as the Lisboa Viva cards whose electronic register and/or "transport stamp" is found in a not regular condition, as per clause 8.1 of the "General Conditions for the Use of the Transport Identification Card".

Penalty payment
Depending on the journey, the offenders will be liable to the payment of a penalty with the minimum value of 70 or 100 euro and the maximum value of 1o5 or 150 euro, plus the value of the fare in debt.
The penalty will be charged by the minimum value, reduced on 20%, if the payment is done on the spot to the ticket inspector or, within a period of five work days, by bank cheque or postal order passed on the name of Metropolitano de Lisboa, EP, or at the company offices, Avenue Sidónio Pais, nº 1, 1050-212 Lisboa.
If, after the five work days period, the offender has not paid the full amount of the penalty, the original of the transgression record, made by the ticket inspector, will be sent to the Instituto Nacional do Transporte Ferroviário, for the institution of administrative prosecution.

Ticket inspectors
The ticket inspectors are duly accredited and may, in the accomplishment of their duties, ask for the identification of the customers, drawing up, for the effect, the proper deeds, and call, when necessary, the intervention of the adequate legal authority.

Smoking is not allowed in the Metropolitano premises open to public service, namely in all end and intermediate stations, in all the accesses and shops or adjoining installations.

Transport of animals
Transport of pet animals is allowed in the Metropolitano trains as long as they are suitably accompanied and accommodated in order not to disturb or upset other passengers.
Dogs or inoffensive animals are considered suitably accommodated if kept in a proper container or under control with a muzzle and on a lead (up to 1 metre length) fixed to a collar, every item made of resistant material.
Blind and visually impaired persons have the right to travel with a guide or assistance dog, which must bear clearly visible a badge issued by a qualified institution (national or foreign) certitying the qualification of the guide dog. It must also possess the corresponding card issued by the above-mentioned institution.
Guide or assistance dogs being trained are also allowed in the same conditions when accompanied by the trainer or the housing family with must be acredited as such.
The above restrictions do not apply to dogs belonging to the Armed Forces or State security Forces.
