Metro Network Interventions

The Rato/Cais do Sodré extension of the Yellow and Green lines, under the Lisbon Metro network expansion plan, will enter a critical phase over the next three months, which will result in some constraints on train circulation on parts of these two lines.

During this period, Lisbon Metro will carry out a series of interventions that will allow the integration of the two new Campo Grande viaducts with the existing ones in order to connect the Green and Yellow lines at Campo Grande station. Once these interventions are concluded, normal circulation will be resumed on the Yellow and Green lines on July 08, 2023.

Due to its nature and complexity, this work is not compatible with train circulation and the operation of the transport system, requiring a number of temporary interruptions to circulation on parts of the Yellow and Green lines.

15 to 26 April - Service closed between Telheiras and Alvalade

From April 15 to 26 (Saturday to Wednesday), trains will not run between Telheiras and Alvalade stations on the Green line due to railway track works.

Trains on the Green line will only run between Alvalade and Cais do Sodré. Telheiras station will be closed.

Campo Grande station on the Yellow line will maintain regular train service.

On April 14 (Friday) trains will run until closing time. Normal service will resume on the entire Green line on April 27 (Thursday).

During the intervention period, Alvalade station south atrium will close at 01:00 am  (instead of 09:30 pm)

Train supply will be increased during peak hours until normal operation on the Green line section is restored.

During this time, we also recommend using the Carris lines on the Telheiras – Campo Grande – Alvalade axis:

  • 767 – Campo Mártires Pátria – Reboleira (Metro)
  • 747 – Campo Grande (Metro) – Pontinha (Metro)
  • 778 – Campo Grande (Metro) – Colégio Militar (Metro)

The CP – Comboios de Portugal service can also be a transport option through the Roma-Areeiro station, to connect to the Yellow line through CP’s Entrecampos station.

What is being done?

Construction of a shunting area at Cidade Universitária station to allow for train inversion (replacing the one at Campo Pequeno) and improve operational conditions.

What does it entail?

Implementation of the train control signalling systems namely, light signals, motorizing track switch equipment, and modifying the supervision and centralized traffic control systems in the new shunting area.

Why is it necessary to interrupt the train operation between Campo Grande and Rato?

This intervention is necessary to keep the Yellow line’s service running between Cidade Universitária and Rato stations from May 2 through July 7, minimize its impact, and guarantee passenger connection between the metro mode and the suburban trains at Entrecampos station, as well as the connection to the University Campus and Santa Maria Hospital.

May 2 to July 7 - Service closed between Telheiras and Campo Grande as well as between Campo Grande and Cidade Universitária

From May 2 to July 7, due to railway track upgrading works, trains on the Green line will not run between Telheiras and Campo Grande stations and, on the Yellow line, between Campo Grande and Cidade Universitária stations.

During this period, Telheiras station will be closed.

These upgrades will allow the new viaducts to be linked to the existing infrastructure.

During this time, the Yellow line from Odivelas to Campo Grande will only operate with 3-car trains.

Operation on the Green line from Campo Grande to Cais do Sodré will be carried out with 3-car trains in the initial phase, with plans to increase to 6-car trains on a date to be determined. Operation on the Yellow line from Cidade Universitária to Rato will be carried out with 6-car trains.

Campo Grande (Yellow and Green lines) and Cidade Universitária (Yellow line) stations will remain in operation from 06:30 a.m. to 01:00 a.m., with the following service changes:

Cidade Universitária

– Yellow Line – Boarding platform towards Rato – in operation;

– Yellow line – Boarding platform towards Rato – closed;

– Yellow line – Boarding platform towards Odivelas – in operation.

On May 1 (Monday) trains will run normally until closing time and normal service will resume on the entire Green and Yellow lines on July 8 (Saturday).

Train supply will be increased during peak hours until normal operation on the Green and Yellow lines is restored.

During the intervention period, Alvalade station south atrium will close at 01:00 am  (instead of 09:30 pm)

During this time, we also recommend using the Carris lines on the Telheiras – Campo Grande axis:

  • 767 – Campo Mártires Pátria – Reboleira (Metro)
  • 747 – Campo Grande (Metro) – Pontinha (Metro)
  • 778 – Campo Grande (Metro) – Colégio Militar (Metro)

Cidade Universitária – Campo Grande:

  • 738 – Estrada Luz – Alto Sto

What is being done?

Integration of the new viaducts built west of the current Campo Grande station into the existing infrastructure, allowing the Circle line to be operational in the future.

What does it entail?

  • Connecting the two new structures in viaducts;
  • Installation of new switches, allowing for a new connection between the Campo Grande (Green line) and Cidade Universitária.
  • Installation of new switches, allowing for a new connection between the Campo Grande (Green line) and Telheiras.

To mitigate the impacts, Metropolitano de Lisboa will increase train frequency on the Green line (reducing waiting times between trains) and coordinate with Carris and other operators to strengthen their transportation service.

The Circular line will be a reality by the end of 2024 and is a structuring project for the city of Lisbon and for the improvement of accessibility and connectivity, since the planned network enables the development of a new internal circularity, materializing a high-frequency distribution platform and connecting metropolitan services more efficiently.

This project, associated with others foreseen in Lisbon Metro network Expansion and Modernization Plan (extension of the São Sebastião/Alcântara Red line, construction of the Loures/Odivelas Light Surface Metro line, a new CBTC railway signaling system and the acquisition of a new rolling stock fleet) will reorganize metropolitan mobility, with an effective increase in the number of public transport users and a reduction in the use of individual transport, with significant environmental gains and an increase in the quality of service that  Lisbon Metro provides to its customers.

Modern and even more efficient public transportation, fighting car congestion, encouraging sustainable forms of mobility, reducing CO2 emissions, and improving quality of life are the benefits that Lisbon Metro will continue to offer to those who live, work, and visit the city of Lisbon.
