How to use?

Frequently asked questions (FAQ)

Q1. What does it mean to use a contactless bank card to travel on public transport?

It means you can travel with a contactless bank card, either physical or virtual (through smartphone/smartwatch technology such as Apple Pay or Google Pay), without having to pre-purchase any ticket.

Q2. What is the advantage of using the contactless payment card to travel on the Lisbon Metro?

The advantage is that you can ride the Lisbon Metro without the inconvenience of having to purchase a ticket in advance. Simply tap your card on the gate validator to pay for your fare and open the gate.

Q3. Where can it be used?

On the entire Lisbon Metro network.

Q4. Who is it for?

For anyone with a contactless bank card who wants to make an occasional (single) ride on the Lisbon Metro network.

Q5. How much does a single ride cost?

Each ride costs €1.80 and allows for travel throughout the entire Metro network.

Q6. How is it used?

Simply swipe your contactless (physical/virtual) payment card over the validator, wait for a success message, a green light and a beep, and the gates will open.

Remember to remove your card from your wallet before tapping it.

Q7. Can I use Apple Pay or Google Pay with my smartphone or smartwatch?

Yes, as long as you have activated them with a VISA, VPAY or Mastercard. If you use one of these devices, make sure it’s charged in the exit validation gate, or you will be considered a passenger without a ticket subject to the legally established penalties.

Q8. May I use my contactless payment card on any card reader?

Yes.

Q9. Can I use the same contactless payment card to pay for more than one passenger?

No. “One card, one passenger” applies.

Q10. Can I use indistinctly the physical or the virtual version of the same card?

Yes, the fare is determined based on the entry validity. However, you must use the same card to validate the same ride (entry and exit). The card you used to validate your entry must also be used to validate your exit. The same is true for smartphones and smartwatches.

Q11. How do I know if my payment card is contactless?

Most contactless bank cards feature a contactless symbolsímbolo contactless . However, some contactless cards may still be unsuitable for this use. If this is the case, we advise you to contact your bank..

Q12. Which contactless cards can be used?

Cards accepted in the Lisbon Metro are: VISA, VPAY, Electron and Mastercard.

Q13. Can I still travel if the validation of my contactless payment card was not successful?

No. To be able to travel you have to get an accepted validation (green light). The message “Passe por favor” will appear on the screen.

Q14. How do I prove that I have successfully validated with the contactless bank card?

If validations fail (red light), save the error code displayed on the validator screen for reference in future contacts with Customer Support (213500115).

The Lisbon Metro network is a closed system, which means that you must always validate your card to get in and out. In addition, ticket inspectors are equipped with control terminals to check when and where the validation occurred.

Q15. Must I show my payment card to any identified ticket inspector?

Yes. If you don’t present your payment card for the inspector to confirm your successful validation, you will be considered as travelling without a ticket and could face legal penalties.

Q16. Why am I unable to use my contactless bank card after it worked the first time?

Possible reasons include:

– The card has expired;
– The card is damaged;
– The card is on a deny list (card not activated, lost, stolen, in debt…).

For more information, check with Customer Support (Tel: +351 213 500 115) or your bank.

Q17. If my card is on the deny list does it mean I won’t be able to use it for other purchases?

No, the deny list is specific to the Lisbon Metro system and does not block your card, it only prevents it from being used in the Metro network until the situation is clarified or pending payments settled.

Q18. How do I remove my card from a deny list?

If your card has been blacklisted due to non-payment, all you have to do is rectify the situation. When outstanding payments are settled, the system checks the situation automatically and removes the card from the blacklist. Hold your card against the validator as soon as your account has a positive balance; even if it displays a red light at first, this will begin an automatic debt recovery operation that, if successful, will allow you to travel again at the next attempt.

Q19. How can I get proof of payment?

The transaction will later appear on your bank statement. To access your travel details use MyTrips. By accessing this portal, you will be redirected to a third-party website. To understand how your data will be handled, please read the privacy statement on that website.

Q20. Do I need to register to use the portal?

No.

Q21. How is the transaction described on my bank statement?

You will see the payment on your bank statement with the description ‘Metropolitano de Lisboa E.P.E./ Amount/ Date.’

It will appear as a separate transaction for each journey, or as an aggregation of journeys if fare optimization is applied.

Q22. Why do I occasionally receive bank notifications about Metro charges whose amounts I do not recognise?

Pre-authorizations may be performed on a periodic basis after card validation to ensure that the card has a positive balance and can be used for travel. If necessary, the bank sends a notification with the pre-authorisation details. The sum in question will not be charged, only the rides taken on the Lisbon Metro network during the day.

Q23. When are the travel fees charged?

The travel fees are charged at the end of each day of travel.

Q24. Are there any additional charges for using the payment card?

No additional charges, you only pay for the journeys.

Q25. Is this payment method safe?

Yes. Payments are completely safe and are processed by companies recognized by VISA and Mastercard to the highest certification standards.
